What exactly do you expect or desire that we do for you, since we can't access your database either?

Did you ask the DBA why you can't have access to the database?

What do you plan to do with it, anyway? Is downloading and installing, for example, 11g XE an option you'd be happy with?

i want to create my own user in the database but the administrator has travelled and does not want to give his admin password, i wanted to know if there is a way to login to the DB. I have downloaded the 11g XE client. he has set the database in the windows server 2008. when i use the connect sys /as sysdba it still asks for a password

You must be logged onto the Operating System as the same OS user who owns the Oracle software files; then no password will be required or requested

I did it but it still doen't work. I don't have the windows server password but he created a user and when i log in with that user i still can't create my own user because he doesn't allow me to. And when i connect /as sys dba there is the following error: error 15026-protocol adaptor error

1) It appears that COPY & PASTE are broken for you.
2) the OS USER needs to be a member of the OS GROUP "ORA_DBA"
3) error free functionality can require proper values in the Windows Registry or some environmental variables being SET to correct values.

BTW - he, I, me & other indefinite pronouns are devoid of meaningful specifics since I am not standing behind you & can't see you or what you type.
Please post only actual OS username or Oracle schema names.

It appears are not qualified on either OS or Oracle to successfully use the back door to gain "/ as sysdba" access.

the created user is a member of the ORA_DBA group, i first log in with his Windows server password and username successfully but when i try to use his schema "yoka.gael" as a username schema and put the same password in the Oracle sqlplus command it gives me that error 15026. Maybe his DBA password is different?? This is why i wanted to login as a SYSTEM using his system username to create my user it does not give access.
Maybe the schema is not properly written??? or the oracle password is different to the sytem password??
I can't even create my system username from his account(yoka.gael)

I suspect you are not posting the actual/correct error here.
I suspect the actual error is ORA-12560 "TNS:protocol adapter error"
Can/will you actually use COPY & PASTE so I can see what you do & how Oracle responds?

Hacker-to-be, you'd rather wait your DBA to return. Your efforts might screw things up.

Are you a DBA? If not then you should NOT have sys or sysdba privilege. Read this for better understanding, SYS/SYSDBA is special.

Let me guess.
You are running sqlplus from your desktop.
The database is on another machine.
When you try to connect to the database, you don't actually specify a database name (actually a net service name).
So ... the client software assumes there is a database on your local machine, with the name specified by the current setting of ORACLE_SID. There is no such database, hence the error.

Frankly, if you are having this much trouble connecting to the database and not understanding why, I - as a DBA - would not allow you to be able to create a user account in the database. I would not allow you to connect with the kind of power that would allow such a thing. This is the kind of thing that if you can't work it out within your own staff, there is probably a reason that goes beyond the technical ....

in Oracle DB there is only 1 SYSTEM schema & it likely already exists.
You are too unknowledgable to be using highly privileged schema & I would expect you likely damage the DB once you log into the DB.

By "system account", I think he means a user account on the host OS system, ie: a Windows account.

is "user" above an OS user or a database user?

creating a new user may be necessary to "admin the database", but I doubt it alone will be sufficient to do so.

PLEASE use COPY & PASTE so we can really see exactly what you do & how Oracle actually responds.

Why? Ask your boss why? Was it told to you about your role when your were hired? Just forget about it and wait for your DBA to come back.

What if somethimg gets screwed up and then Boss might take you for a ride. Can you justify it?

If you don't know how to get connected, if you don't know how to create a user on either the database or the OS, then you have no business "admin the database". YOu'd be walking around with a loaded gun and no idea what the trigger is for or where the bullet comes out.

Your absent DBA should be applauded for standing up to your boss. Your absent dBA has more smarts than your boss.

Well, I know a bit about Africa. The usual rules do not apply.

I've just tested exactly the syntax you quoted above: Quote:
when i use the connect sys /as sysdba it still asks for a password
I get prompted for a password, but just hit RETURN and get connected:
orcla>
orcla> conn sys /as sysdba
Enter password:
Connected.
orcla>
orcla> sho user
USER is "SYS"
orcla>
I most definitely did NOT enter any password. That is not a syntax that I would usually use, but it works.

Kind of hacking Smile Just kidding, but OP shouldn't get such ideas as he is not supposed to do that in anyway. At least, I would never want such thing to happen in my application, lest it should be a nightmare.

P.S. I have a client based out of Africa, basically telecom domain. Always eager to switch to latest release, but at the same time extrememly concerned about roles and privileges. I came to know about a junior DBA being fired because of using FLASHBAK DATABASE faeture in production without the project manager's concent. Hope he learnt a leaaon and would take utmost care in future.

Your DBA has returned from vacation, and he can't remember "the password", so YOU are supposed to connect as sysdba and change the password of SYS?

This sounds like either an attempt to hack (no, I'm not smiling) or your DBA is the only person in your organization who seems to give a flying fig about security. If I were in his position I'd do the same.

You have no business doing what you claim you are trying to do. If it were legitimate, you'd already know how.

I'd encourage others on this thread to cease and desist from "aiding and abetting"

it is not a hack!! he has many things to do in the company and hasn't been connected in the DB for up to 6 months now!! he is working on the SydoniaWorld App at the moment in the company....This is the reason why my boss told him to give me the passwords so that i will administer coz he can't do all at the same time...And now it happens that he does not remember the password(the reason he gave is that he installed the DB a long time ago and hasn't been connected in a while)
